Officials have announced that a man from California tragically lost his life after falling 300 feet during a hike in Oregon, according to a news release. The incident occurred while he was accompanied by his wife.
Richard Ehrhart, a 69-year-old hiker, embarked on the Natural Bridges coastal trail in Curry County, Oregon, along with his wife, Susan Kimura, on Sunday. During their hike, the two temporarily parted ways along the trail. Subsequently, Kimura made her way back to their car, leaving Ehrhart to continue his solo adventure.
The cause of the San Jose resident’s fall remains unclear.
The Curry County Sheriff’s Office was alerted by a concerned individual at approximately 2:35 p.m. local time about a possible deceased individual spotted below the trail on the rocks. Deputies from the Curry County Sheriff’s Office and an Oregon State Trooper promptly arrived at the location. In addition, the sheriff’s office search and rescue team was summoned to the scene. Two team members skillfully descended to the area where Ehrhart had fallen.
The members of the search and rescue team, along with other officials present at the scene, transported Ehrhart’s body back to the trail and confirmed his identity.
The local sheriff’s office emphasized the importance of recognizing the hazards associated with hiking the coastal trails and urged individuals to prioritize their safety while in the area.
The coastal trail is an easy hike, according to AllTrails.com, which categorizes and provides hiking directions for trails around the country and offers vistas of arched rocks above the ocean. However, the location features “steep cliffs,” and hikers should always stick to marked pathways and viewpoint spots, according to the website.
