Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene took action on Wednesday by initiating a vote to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson from his position. However, her efforts were quickly met with opposition as Democrats, along with the majority of Republicans, decisively rejected her motion.

Lawmakers in the chamber expressed their dissatisfaction with Greene’s speech by booing as she extensively aired her grievances with Johnson and demanded a vote.

Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, alongside co-sponsor Representative Thomas Massie, boldly stated that Johnson had failed to fulfill any of the promises he made to the Republican conference following his election to the top post in October.

Republican Speaker Mike Johnson has been accused by Representative Greene of assisting the Democrats and the Biden administration in dismantling our country by advancing the Democratic agenda and limiting the Republicans’ ability to influence legislation.

Johnson and his leadership team were present on the House floor when Greene began reading her resolution.

The House wasted no time in taking action on Greene’s attempt to remove Johnson. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise promptly called for a vote to table Greene’s resolution, effectively putting an end to her efforts. This motion to table received bipartisan support and was successfully passed.

The motion put forth by Greene was ultimately dismissed with a vote of 359-43, with seven lawmakers voting present. There was a wave of applause from lawmakers as the final tally was announced.

Greene’s motion to kill a bill received opposition from 11 Republicans and 32 Democrats.

Johnson playfully bantered with reporters following the vote, quipping, “Looks like just another Wednesday on Capitol Hill.”

The speaker criticized Greene’s resolution as a “misguided effort” but expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their support.

Johnson expressed his hope that the personality politics and character assassination that have characterized the 118th Congress would finally come to an end. He found it regrettable and believed that it did not align with American values. Johnson emphasized the need to move past such divisive tactics and strive for a better future.

In a conversation with ABC News Senior Congressional Correspondent Rachel Scott, Greene expressed her lack of surprise regarding the outcome of the vote against her motion to vacate the speaker’s chair.

“I believe this is precisely what the American people needed to witness,” she expressed.

“I didn’t enter Congress with the intention of joining the uni-party, and today’s events only confirmed that. The Republican Party has shown that they are willing to collaborate extensively with the Democrats,” she remarked.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries explained that his party chose to assist in preserving Johnson’s position in order to restore common sense and bring an end to the chaos in Washington.

According to the New York congressman, our choice to prevent Marjorie Taylor Greene from causing more chaos in the House of Representatives and the country is driven by our dedication to finding bipartisan solutions for everyday Americans. He emphasized the need for common sense rather than chaos in Washington, D.C. and referred to Marjorie Taylor Greene and extreme MAGA Republicans as agents of chaos.

Jeffries responded by saying that “the vote clearly speaks for itself” when repeatedly asked if Democrats would vote to save Johnson again or if they would require concessions from Johnson in the future.

“It was a resounding vote based on personal conviction. The result was clear and definitive. As a Congress, we must now focus on forging ahead,” he emphasized.

When questioned about her intentions to remove Johnson once more, Greene remained silent and did not provide a response.

Former President Donald Trump, a supporter of Johnson in his ongoing dispute with Greene, expressed his opinion on Truth Social, stating that this was not the appropriate time to initiate motions to vacate.

In a recent statement, he emphasized the importance of unity and its impact on the overall situation. “If we display disunity, it will be portrayed as chaos, and it will have a detrimental effect on everything,” he expressed. He acknowledged the efforts made by Mike Johnson, recognizing him as a good man who is working diligently. While he expressed a desire for certain things to have been accomplished in the past two months, he remains confident that they will be achieved by working together.

Despite the challenges, Greene expressed gratitude for the support she received from Trump.

Greene’s decision on Wednesday marked a sudden change in strategy, surprising many after she seemed to be reconsidering her prolonged threat. This came after engaging in consecutive meetings with Johnson on Monday and Tuesday.
