Walgreens is set to execute a series of closures across its approximate 8,600 retail stores in America as a part of its efforts to revamp its struggling operations.
On Thursday, the retail giant announced its plans to shut down several underperforming branches throughout the nation as part of their ongoing optimization strategy. Although the exact figures were not disclosed, the company emphasized these shutdowns to be significant and a long-term plan that will unfold over several years.

During an interview with the Wall Street Journal, CEO Tim Wentworth emphasized the importance of the upcoming store closures, stating that they account for a significant percentage of the less profitable locations, approximately one-fourth of them.
According to Wentworth, the focus of the shake-up will be on stores that are not generating profits, those that are situated too close to each other, and those that are grappling with persistent theft issues.
Walgreens’ announcement during the quarterly earnings report led to a significant drop in pre-market trading shares, with a nearly 9% plummet. Additionally, the full-year profit forecast cut added to the negative impact on the company’s stock prices.
Wentrought acknowledged the challenging business conditions and stated, “The operating environment remains tough, with ongoing pressures on the U.S. consumer and the impact of recent marketplace changes leading to a decline in pharmacy margins.” He further added that their results and future prospects are influenced by these unfavorable market conditions.
