An Ohio man was connected to a fatal collision on a Kentucky highway through a year-old jailhouse phone call. The collision resulted in the death of an 18-year-old college student after the man’s tire fell off his truck.
On June 21st, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Ricky A. Raider had been indicted by a grand jury for the tragic incident that resulted in the death of University of Kentucky student, Lauren Collins.
On July 16, 2023, around 12:15 a.m., Collins, a fashion merchandising major and rising sophomore, was driving southbound on the highway near the Ohio border when a runaway tire collided with her car.
As Raider traveled northbound, his truck’s tire reportedly broke off and rolled over the concrete barrier, colliding with the windshield of Collins’ white 2012 Buick LaCrosse.
Collins was rescued from her car by first responders who quickly transported her to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center due to the life-threatening injuries she sustained.
A roadside memorial has been created with a damaged child’s bicycle and a photograph to discourage high-speed drivers from going too fast. The memorial is meant to look fake and has been strategically placed to catch the attention of speeding motorists. The hope is that drivers will see the memorial and slam on their brakes, thus slowing down their speed and preventing accidents.
Sadly, Collins passed away at the hospital while being the only person in her car.
Roughly a week following the tragic incident, Raider, aged 37, voluntarily presented himself to the Independence Police Department. He confessed that he had experienced a tire blowout on the interstate during the previous weekend. However, he had not deemed it necessary to check if his tire had hit anyone.
Several months after the incident, Sergent Jeff Nagy from the Accident Reconstruction Unit of the department acquired a phone recording of Raider conversing with a female inmate within the confines of the Bullitt County Detention Center, located approximately 108 miles southwest of the Independence Police Department.
A shocking video has surfaced online, showing a Cybertruck crashing into a neighbor’s house just hours after it was purchased. The incident, which took place in a residential area, shows the vehicle losing control and smashing into the property. The footage has gone viral, with many expressing their shock and concern over the safety of the Cybertruck. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the need to follow traffic rules to ensure the safety of oneself and others on the road.
Collins’ murder occurred on the same night as the prison call.
According to reports, Raider confessed to driving his 1993 Ford F-250 towards the north when one of his tires dismounted from the vehicle during their conversation.
According to the sheriff’s office, Raider informed the woman on the phone that he witnessed the tire slamming into Collins’ vehicle and realized that the impact could have resulted in severe injury or even death.

It is reported that Raider quickly got back on the tire after witnessing the crash and left the scene.
According to Major Philip Ridgell from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, the individual resorted to stealing lug nuts from other wheels to secure the tire and get it off the interstate. “What he did was he stole lug nuts from other wheels to secure that tire just to get it up the road and off of the interstate,” Major Ridgell stated in an interview with WXIX.
The authorities apprehended Raider, who now faces charges for violating the law by leaving the scene of an accident without rendering aid. The charges include one count of Class D Felony for causing death or serious physical injury and one count of Persistent Felony Offender 1st Offense.
Currently, he is in custody at Boone County Detention Center where he is being held on a cash bond of $40,000.
According to the outlet, Raider made a court appearance on Wednesday where he requested a public defender to represent him. His next court date is scheduled for July 24.
