Attorney General Merrick Garland strongly refutes “false” narratives about the Department of Justice, according to ABC News.
The AG chastised Republicans for their “extremely dangerous falsehoods” regarding the DOJ. During his hearing before a House subcommittee run by Trump’s allies, he told Republicans, who are seeking to hold him in contempt for failing to turn over records connected to Biden’s handling of confidential documents following his vice presidency, that he will “not be intimidated.”
Republicans used the House Judiciary Committee hearing to bolster their assertion that Biden politicized the department against Trump, a position that might have had more traction if Biden’s son, Hunter, had not been on trial for federal gun charges. However, Trump has continued to portray himself as a victim of a “rigged” legal system, a distorted narrative that elected Republicans have readily embraced.
Garland slammed Republicans’ “conspiracy theory” that the department was behind Trump’s criminal conviction in New York, which was a state-level prosecution conducted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. According to the Associated Press, Garland dismissed the GOP’s charges as “baseless.”
“Certain members of this Committee and the Oversight Committee are seeking contempt as a means of obtainingโffor no legitimate purpose โ sensitive law enforcement information that could harm the integrity of future investigations,” Garland stated in his opening remarks to ABC News. “This effort is only the most recent in a long line of attacks on the Justice Department’s work.”
Garland also challenged Trump’s false claim that the FBI agents searching his Mar-a-Lago estate had “authority to shoot.” Last Monday, the FBI said that its agents followed “standard procedure.”
Garland stated that the FBI’s lying “raises the threats of violence,” and that the language highlighted by Trump and others, which permits action if certain conditions are met, “was part of the package for the search of President Biden’s home.”
