A group of Missouri tradeswomen chastised Republican Sen. Josh Hawley for his support for Harrison Butker, the Kansas City Chiefs kicker who sparked outrage when he said American women should embrace traditional homemaking roles rather than fall for “diabolical lies” advanced by feminists and progressives.
“When Harrison Butker told a group of young college graduates that working women like us have fallen for ‘diabolical lies’ by providing for our families, Senator Josh Hawley had a chance to stand up for us and our freedom,” the women said in an open letter obtained by The Daily Beast.
“Instead, Hawley showed us his true colors by defending that message.”
55 Missouri women who are union members, including carpenters, auto workers, and ironworkers, signed the open letter.
Butker told students at Benedictine College in Kansas last month: “I believe you, the women, have been taught the most devilish lies.
“Some of you may go on to have excellent jobs in the world, but I believe the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into the world.” “I can assure you that my lovely wife Isabelle would be the first to state that her life genuinely began when she began living her calling as a wife and mother.”
Butker also stated that his wife valued “one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”
Like Butker, Hawley is a staunch social conservative. The senator’s wife, Erin Hawley, is a well-known anti-abortion lawyer.
Amid the heated debate over Butker’s words, Hawley told Spectrum News, “I’m not going to go in for all of this lefty garbage, and I just thought that his calls for people to stand up and be bold were great.”
Hawley has also spoken of his friendship with Butker, who has complained of receiving “a shocking level of hate” after his Benedictine College address.
In their open letter, the Missouri tradeswomen acknowledged that Butker “has the right to say and believe whatever he wants.” But, turning to the kicker’s buddy and ally, they continued, “The problem for us is that Josh Hawley has elevated his obsession with controlling how women live to the level of elected office.”
“Hawley voted against the Pregnant Workers’ Fairness Act. He has criticized no-fault divorce laws. He reduced overtime pay for almost 200,000 Missouri employees, including women, who are their families’ sole source of income. And he has led the battle to take away our right to choose how we raise our children and what we do with our bodies.”
Hawley, according to the women, “believes it takes guts for a pair of millionaires to teach young women that most of them should be homemakers instead of pursuing their own dreams—and that somehow the condemnation of that message makes that pair the victims.”
“That’s not surprising, since he also thinks it’s courageous for a millionaire politician to say things like “home is a promise given to a husband, made possible only by a wife,” and that “man’s job is to provide for his family” in a book titled Manhood.”
Hawley’s third book, The Masculine Virtues America Needs, released in the US last year. Conventional critics met it with disapproval. Some, including Hawley’s political opponents, criticized the omission of the senator’s possibly most famous national stage deed: his videotaped escape from rioters he had supported on January 6.
Hawley did not return a request for comment.
“When Josh Hawley refers to himself as ‘pro-worker,’ he does not mean us—working women,” stated the Missouri tradeswomen. He believes it is his responsibility to advise us on how to live. It is not. His role is to defend our freedom and invest in our communities, allowing us to raise our children as we see fit.
“So, our advice to Josh is to start doing his job.” We’ll continue doing ours.”
