Ricky Stenhouse Jr. claimed that Kyle Busch’s “running his mouth” contributed to their NASCAR incident in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. The battle was also followed by an on-track altercation in which Busch rammed Stenhouse’s Chevrolet into a wall.
Stenhouse addressed Busch following the All-Star Race on Sunday night at North Wilkesboro Speedway. This led to a confrontation between many members of both racing crews in the pit area, with post-race fireworks exploding overhead.
“It’s definitely built-up frustration with how he runs his mouth all the time about myself,” Stenhouse remarked on Fox Sports.
“I know he is frustrated because he doesn’t run near as well as he used to.”
The drivers began with a brief debate about damaging each other. Stenhouse then drew back his right arm and hit Busch on the side of the head. Both drivers ended up on the ground after their crew members got into a group of haulers.
“I’m tired of getting run over by everybody,” Busch told reporters just before the battle. “But that’s what everybody does; everybody runs over everybody in order to pass everybody.”
During the second lap of the race, Busch’s car initially pushed Stenhouse, causing him to scrape its right side against the wall while making a pass. Busch then stepped on the gas, approaching Stenhouse’s bumper before colliding with his back left fender.
The move knocked Stenhouse sideways. He then slammed against the wall, shredding his hood and calling it a day.
Stenhouse drove his No. 47 Chevrolet to Busch’s No. 8 Chevrolet pit box and got out. Stenhouse also ascended the ladder in Busch’s pit box to speak with his crew before waiting for the race to end and confronting his competitor.
Joey Logano won the race and received $1 million. He led for 199 of the 200 laps, establishing an All-Star Race record. Busch finished tenth, while Stenhouse came in twentieth.
The Coca-Cola 600 will take place on Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina. Stenhouse told Busch after the race that he intends to wreck his car at the event, which will be telecast at 6 p.m. on Fox.
