According to a report by Bloomberg News, earlier this year, Elon Musk, the founder of Neuralink, a company that produces brain implants, welcomed his third child with Shivon Zilis, who is the director of special projects at the same company.
When asked about the birth of his third child with Zilis, Musk confirmed the news in an interview with the New York Post. However, the name and sex of the child were not disclosed by the entrepreneur. Despite a request for comment, there has been no immediate response from Neuralink.
In response to claims that he kept the birth of his latest child a secret, Musk clarified in an interview with the Post that this was not the case. According to Musk, “secretly fathered” is a false statement and all of their friends and family were aware of the birth. He also added that not issuing a press release did not equate to keeping the news a secret, as it would be unusual to do so.
In 2021, Musk and Zilis welcomed twins to their family, just before Musk’s second child with musician Grimes was born. Their baby girl, named Exa Dark Siderรฆl Musk, arrived shortly after. With a fortune valued at $207 billion, Musk is the second richest person in the world and advocates for increasing the global birth rate. In a 2022 tweet, he expressed concern over the decline in births, stating that it is “the biggest danger civilization faces by far,” and shared that he is “doing my best to help the underpopulation crisis.”
According to Musk, the trend of countries falling below the replacement rate is a fact and not a theory that has been debunked. As he told the Post, almost all countries are following this trend.
The global population has experienced significant growth over the years, from approximately 1 billion in 1900 to about 8 billion people today. Experts estimate that by 2045, the world population will reach 9 billion. Despite this growth, birth rates in certain developed nations, including the United States and South Korea, have decreased in recent decades. In fact, these rates have fallen below the replacement level, which is typically defined as 2.1 children per woman and indicates the level at which a population replaces itself from one generation to the next.
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has highlighted the issue of declining birth rates in developed countries, which could lead to significant economic and social problems. This includes putting additional financial pressure on government services and pension schemes such as Social Security as fewer adults are having children. The reasons for this trend are multifaceted, with factors such as unaffordable housing for families and the challenges of balancing a career and family life being among the key contributors, according to the OECD.
