Chicago police superintendent described the tragic incident that occurred early Sunday, where a police officer was shot and killed while heading home from his shift. The officer became a victim of the very crime he had been working tirelessly to combat.
During a news conference on Sunday morning, Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling revealed that the slain officer, who was 30 years old, had been shot multiple times and had his car stolen.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has identified the slain officer as Luis M. Huesca, describing his death as a tragic outcome of senseless gun violence within our city.
In a heartfelt post on X, Johnson expressed his condolences to Officer Huesca’s grieving family, including his mother and uncle. During their meeting, Johnson assured them that they have his complete support during this unimaginable loss. The entire city is mourning, and Johnson extends his condolences to Luis’ fellow officers and the community.
According to the mayor, Huesca was a member of the Priority Response Team in the police department’s 5th District.
Huesca was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where medical professionals pronounced him dead, according to officials.
Detectives are currently investigating whether the officer was shot during a carjacking, according to Snelling.
“We are currently unable to confirm this information, but our detectives are actively investigating the matter. What we can confirm is that the officer’s vehicle has been stolen,” Snelling explained. “However, in order to fully understand the motive behind this incident, we require additional information, and our detective division is diligently working towards obtaining that.”
No arrests have been announced.
The shooting occurred at approximately 2:53 a.m. in the Gage Park neighborhood on West 56th Street near South Kedzie Avenue, as stated by the police. Upon receiving a gunshot detection alert, officers arrived at the scene and discovered the critically injured officer lying on the ground, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
According to Snell, the CPD officer who was shot had been with the department for six years. He was wearing his uniform with a jacket over it at the time of the incident.
According to Snelling, our officer was on his way home after completing his tour of duty when he was tragically shot multiple times.
The shooting occurred in the 8th Police District on the Southwest Side of the city, according to CPD.
“He worked tirelessly to protect communities and ensure the safety of individuals. Unfortunately, today, that officer became a victim of the very crime he was fighting against in order to keep people safe in our city,” Snelling expressed. “There is an alarming amount of violent crime in this area, and there are individuals who display audacious and cowardly behavior as they carry out these acts of violence against the law-abiding citizens who simply want to live their lives in peace. This cycle of violence must come to an end.”
The officer’s survival is marked by the presence of his mother and uncle, according to Snelling.
“He was not only an exceptional officer but also a remarkable human being, and his family is currently going through a difficult time. My heartfelt condolences go out to them. Let us all keep the family, especially his mother, in our prayers,” expressed Snelling. “These senseless crimes are tragically claiming the lives of our community members. Today, we mourn the loss of one of our dedicated officers.”
