A Georgia police officer allegedly shot and murdered the Lyft driver who was transporting him home, believing the victim was attempting to kidnap him and recruit him into a “gay fraternity.”
Documents at Fulton County Jail charge Koby Minor with murder and aggravated assault. Minor, who had been an Atlanta police officer since 2018, resigned after his arrest, according to a statement from the department.
WSB-TV acquired an arrest affidavit revealing that Minor was at the home of a fellow cop when he requested a Lyft ride shortly after midnight on Wednesday. Minor climbed into the back seat of driver Reginald Folk’s car and began driving along State Road 14. The now-ex-cop claimed Folks began conversing in a foreign language on the phone through the car’s Bluetooth radio when Minor thought he heard another voice, according to the affidavit.
Folks allegedly continued driving despite Minor’s request to leave the vehicle. He tried to open the door, but it wouldn’t open. After Folks reached the back seat, Minor allegedly fired three shots, striking the driver in the head. According to the affidavit, the minor shattered a window and climbed out of the car.
According to a witness, Minor flagged her down for help and stated that he felt his driver was attempting to kidnap him because he was “in a gay fraternity and was trying to recruit” him.
Local Fox affiliate WAGA reported. When Union City police arrived, the minor surrendered. Medical officials confirmed the 35-year-old’s death at the scene.
Minor was already on leave following an arrest in December 2023 for allegedly crashing his automobile with 20 unprescribed Xanax pills in his bag. The APD stated that he had been in possession of his agency weapon since then.
People’s mother, Marchelle Folks, told NBC station WXIA that her son moved to Atlanta about 12 years ago and had recently started professional wrestling. She stated that her family is heartbroken.
“I am extremely proud of the man he has become.” “Everywhere I went, people recognized and enjoyed him.” He always ran into people he knew,” she explained. “He was a friendly, gregarious person. Reggie was very much the life of the party.”
Lyft also issued a statement regarding the incident.
“Our sympathies are with Mr. Folks’ loved ones as they deal with this horrific tragedy, and we have reached out to offer our assistance during this difficult time. “We are prepared to assist law authorities in any investigation and have permanently banned the rider’s account from the Lyft community.”
