According to the Department of Correction, an inmate from Rikers Island managed to escape police custody on Wednesday while being treated at a Manhattan hospital. The incident has raised concerns about the security measures in place to prevent such occurrences and has prompted an investigation into the matter.
According to officials, James Mossetty, a 35-year-old man, was admitted to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue on June 5 due to a medical problem. However, he escaped custody at approximately 9:40 p.m. and was last spotted running on the FDR Drive as reported by the NYPD.
According to the Department of Corrections (DOC), Mossetty was taken into custody on January 6th in Manhattan. The charges against him include assault, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and theft of services.
As of Thursday afternoon, the suspect was still not apprehended. According to the police, the suspect is 5-foot-6 and was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, gray sweatpants, black glasses, and black shoes.
The NYPD and U.S. Marshals are collaborating with the DOC to capture Mossetty.
