A Russian air attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in six districts began early Wednesday, involving dozens of missiles and drones, according to Ukrainian officials.
According to Ukrainian military officials, Russia launched at least 21 attack drones, including Iranian-made Shahed drones, as well as around 55 missiles.
Ukrainian anti-aircraft defenses downed 20 drones and perhaps 39 additional munitions, according to a statement from the Ukrainian Air Force.
The attack on Wednesday was one of the most widespread attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since March 22, 2024, when Russia conducted its heaviest attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure since the conflict began.
“On Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II Day, Nazi Putin launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media.
He added that first responders were attempting to “mitigate the consequences of Russian terror,” adding that the entire world needed to know who was who. The world must not give a platform to new Nazism.”
Poltava, Kirovohrad, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Vinnytsia areas all suffered damage to their energy facilities.
The attack began at midnight, when drones entered Ukrainian airspace, and lasted approximately seven hours, according to officials. At 4 a.m., planes launched missiles. By 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Ukraine had turned off air-raid sirens.
The state energy operator, Ukrenerho, said that electricity-producing facilities had been destroyed.
Russia had already struck Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on March 22, March 29, April 11, and April 27.
