According to Decision Desk HQ, State Senator Suhas Subramanyam (D) emerged victorious in the crowded Democratic race to succeed retiring Representative Jennifer Wexton (D) in Virginia.

Subramanyam emerged victorious amongst 11 other contenders to secure the Democratic nomination for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District. Representative Wexton had declared last year that she would not be running for re-election due to a recent diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) affecting her health.

According to the Virginia Public Access Project, Subramanyam was a highly successful fundraiser in the field, raising over $1 million. He also earned the endorsement of Wexton in the primary election.

Last month, Virginia Mercury reported that some of Subramanyam’s campaign staffers also worked for him in his official capacity as a state senator. However, federal campaign finance filings did not disclose the reported pay of some of these campaign staffers.

According to a Virginia news outlet, the campaign team confirmed that funds were allocated to compensate multiple staffers through the consulting firm of their campaign manager. The campaign emphasized that all actions were in compliance with federal campaign election laws.

In 2020, the district was won by President Biden with a significant lead of 18 points.
