Donald Trump vowed to defeat President Joe Biden in the 2024 election in New York during a surprise campaign stop at a construction site in Manhattan early Thursday morning, on a day when testimony in his hush money trial resumes and the US Supreme Court hears arguments in his “presidential immunity” case.
“We’re going to make a play for New York,” Mr. Trump told reporters during the event.
“Normally, a Democrat would win New York. Biden is the worst president in history, and we have some very horrible individuals here, but we also have the best people, and they all want us to run, and we’re going to run very hard in New York,” he said.
“I believe we have a decent chance of winning in New York. “We’ll give it a shot.”
Mr. Trump made a surprise appearance at the junction of East 48th Street and Park Avenue, near the JP Morgan Chase Building in Midtown Manhattan, to meet with a gathering of union and construction workers.
He stayed for around 15 minutes, shaking hands with workers, posing for photographs, and signing signatures.
Several admirers, some of whom told reporters they had gotten up early to catch a glimpse of him, chanted, “USA!”
The campaign stop occurred while he was on his way to criminal court in Manhattan for the seventh day of his hush money trial.
Walking into the courthouse, he stated that his campaign is also arranging a demonstration at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
In the hush money case, 34 felony counts accuse Mr. Trump of fabricating business documents to conceal hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels, allegedly to silence her over an alleged affair from 2006. Mr. Trump denies both the affair and all of the claims brought against him.
Former National Enquirer CEO David Pecker returned to the stand on Thursday morning to speak about his arrangement with President Trump and his former attorney Michael Cohen to “kill” reports about the defendant’s alleged affairs.
Today, New York Justice Juan Merchan could make a decision on whether to hold Mr. Trump in contempt and impose a $10,000 fine for allegedly breaching a trial gag order by sharing witness and juror information on Truth Social.
On the same day, the US Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the former president’s famous “presidential immunity” case, in which he attempts to avoid prosecution for alleged crimes committed while in office.
Mr. Trump claims that a Richard Nixon-era rule grants him broad immunity from prosecution related to his time in the White House.
The former president will be absent because he must attend his criminal hush money trial.
Mr. Trump is now facing two more felony charges stemming from his alleged attempts to reverse the 2020 election results, as well as another for storing sensitive materials after leaving the White House.
