The Transportation Security Administration made an announcement that they were able to screen a staggering number of over 2.95 million airline passengers on Friday, which marks a remarkable milestone as the highest number of passengers screened in a single day.
On X, formerly known as Twitter, the agency announced on Saturday that a new record had been set for the number of individuals screened at airport checkpoints nationwide on Friday. A total of 2,951,163 individuals were screened, surpassing the previous record of 2,907,378, which was set on the Sunday after Thanksgiving last year.
Lisa Farbstein, a spokesperson for the TSA, enthusiastically acknowledged the passengers who flew the previous day and commended them for being part of a historic milestone.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) anticipated that Friday would be the most hectic day for air travel as Memorial Day weekend approached, with an estimated 3 million individuals projected to go through airport checkpoints.
On Thursday, TSA screened nearly 2.9 million individuals, falling just short of the previous record by about 11,000. According to the agency, five out of the ten busiest travel days in history have occurred since May 16th.
Memorial Day weekend travel is projected to set new records on the roads.
The American Automobile Association (AAA) has issued a warning about the possibility of unprecedented congestion on roads and even more crowded airports than in previous years. AAA, an organization that analyzes different economic factors and collaborates with other groups to forecast travel conditions, recently announced that approximately 43.8 million people in the United States are expected to travel at least 50 miles from Thursday to Monday. This represents a 4% increase in overall travel compared to 2023, according to AAA.
According to Paula Twidale, the senior vice president of the travel division at AAA, this Memorial Day weekend is witnessing travel numbers that haven’t been seen in almost two decades. Twidale stated, “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.” These statistics highlight the anticipation of a bustling summer travel season.
