Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, a Republican, made the decision to veto several bills on Friday, which included a significant one that aimed to safeguard the availability of contraceptives.
In a statement released by his office, Youngkin expressed his anticipation for collaborating with the General Assembly to negotiate the language of the bills. However, he stated that he had to make a decision based on the current wording, and there were multiple bills that were not yet prepared to be enacted into law.

Youngkin stated in his veto statement that the legislation had created a cause of action that was too broad, targeting political subdivisions, parents, and medical professionals who were simply acting within their expertise and within the scope of their practice.
In his response, he stated, “The recommendations I sent back to the General Assembly addressed that very issue. I am committed to upholding the oath I took to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia.”
The bills in the State House and Senate chambers emphasize that individuals have the right to access and use contraceptives. They stress that this right should not be restricted or hindered by any law, regulation, or policy that limits or delays access to contraceptives or information about contraception.
In his rebuke, Youngkin stated that contraceptives are already protected under the Constitution. Instead of signing a new law, he proposed substitute language that would establish access to birth control as a policy. This information was reported by local outlet WRC-TV.
But, when state officials allowed his motion to expire, they sent the original bill to his desk.
Although he vetoed it, Youngkin emphasized his endorsement of contraceptives.
The Virginia Democratic Party didn’t hold back in their response to the governor’s veto.
Susan Swecker, chair for the Virginia Democratic Party, expressed her disappointment in Governor Youngkin’s disregard for the well-being and rights of Virginians. In a press release, she stated, “Governor Youngkin just proved to Virginians that once again, he does not care about their health or rights.”
“By choosing not to protect contraception, Youngkin is causing harm to thousands of individuals who rely on it for managing various health conditions,” she stated. “This issue directly impacts both health and personal freedom, and Youngkin and Republicans are displaying a careless and blatant disregard for both aspects.”
