On Monday night, a homeless man was reportedly breaking into cars on the Greek Row of the University of Southern California when he was allegedly fatally stabbed by a student who has since been taken into custody.
According to NBC Los Angeles, Ivan Gallegos, a 19-year-old from Los Angeles, has been arrested and charged with murder. He is currently being held on a $2 million bond.
At approximately 8:15 p.m. on Monday, a tragic stabbing occurred on West 28th Street outside of a fraternity house. According to the authorities, it appears that the student engaged in a confrontation with a homeless man which resulted in the deadly incident.
During the confrontation, Gallegos claimed that the homeless man was carrying a firearm, LAPD Chief Dominic Choi reported. However, a source from law enforcement informed The Los Angeles Times that no weapon was found at the location.
According to the LAPD, the victim, who was male, was in the process of breaking into vehicles at the location when the suspect confronted him and proceeded to stab him. Sadly, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by LAFD paramedics. On the bright side, the suspect was apprehended at the scene and taken into custody without incident.
According to the county coroner, the victim’s age is estimated to be in his 30s, however, his identity has not yet been confirmed.
According to The Times, a homeless person stabbed the house manager of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity in the same alleyway where another stabbing occurred last year.
According to Scott Conner, a member of the fraternity, the homeless man was confronted when he allegedly attempted to steal a bike, resulting in the stabbing.
According to The Times, he mentioned that the individuals in that area are quite assertive and forceful. He further added that there is a significant population of homeless people residing in that locality. Lately, there have been a series of break-ins in schools, cars, and houses, which has been ongoing for the entire school year. These sorts of incidents have become commonplace in that area.
