Convergent Outsourcing, a debt collection company, has agreed to pay $2.45 million to settle a lawsuit stemming from a 2022 data breach. During the breach, sensitive information like Social Security numbers and financial details was exposed. This led to a lawsuit alleging that the company did not adequately protect the affected individuals’ information. While Convergent Outsourcing maintains it did nothing wrong, it decided to settle the case. Victims of the breach can claim up to $11,500 each to cover fraud losses, credit expenses, and other related costs. The settlement aims to provide relief to those who suffered as a result of the breach.

In addition to Convergent Outsourcing, other companies such as Capital One and a telecom company are settling class-action lawsuits. Capital One is paying $16 million to settle claims of unfair fees charged to its customers, benefiting both current and former account holders. The telecom company is resolving a $2.2 million settlement, while an NFL team is returning $1.3 million to fans in separate legal agreements. These settlements underscore how companies are addressing issues related to data security and customer rights, seeking to compensate those affected by their actions.

Those affected by these breaches have been notified and can file claims to receive compensation. To make a claim, individuals need to provide proof of their losses, such as bank statements or receipts. This process ensures that those who suffered financial harm from these incidents can recover some of their losses. It also serves as a means to hold companies accountable for protecting personal information and adhering to regulations that safeguard consumers. These settlements underscore the ongoing importance of cybersecurity and legal compliance in protecting people’s private information in today’s digital landscape.
