A shoplifter caused mayhem in Midtown Saturday, stabbing and critically wounding a Duane Reade security guard and threatening another person, according to police sources.
According to police sources, the 21-year-old security officer attempted to stop the accused shoplifter from stealing from the drugstore at West 53rd and 8th Avenue.
However, the guy pulled out a knife and stabbed the male security guard in the arm and left side of his body, according to police sources.
According to sources, the suspect threatened another individual outside the store with the knife.
The police arrived at the gruesome scene shortly before 4 p.m.
The attack shook the local community.
“I am anxious and afraid. The city has altered dramatically. We have to watch our backs at the stores and on the subway,” said Ermal Gura, 35, of Staten Island, who noted that because of the spike in theft, everyone needs to “call customer service just to buy a shampoo.”
According to police sources, the male suspect was discovered several blocks away with the knife still on him.
According to cops, the security guard was brought to New York Presbyterian Hospital in serious condition.
According to sources, the suspect was caught and is currently at the Midtown North precinct.
