According to officials, a funeral reception being held at a community center in the Chicago suburbs was targeted by multiple gunmen in a vehicle who opened fire, resulting in injuries to three individuals.
Around 3:30 p.m. local time on Friday, a shooting took place in Blue Island, Illinois, a city located approximately 16 miles south of the Chicago Loop. At the time, a repast funeral service was being held at the Salvation Army community center, which was rented out for the occasion, as per Blue Island City Administrator Tom Wogan.
During a press briefing on Friday evening, Wogan reported that a vehicle carrying several gunmen had fired shots at the front of the building.
As per Wogan, the situation was incredibly frantic as a concealed carry permit holder, who was present at the service, came out of the building and retaliated with gunfire.
The Blue Island Police Department announced Friday night that they have taken one person into custody for questioning regarding the shooting.
The authorities are currently engaged in identifying the suspect vehicle and the individuals involved in the crime.
Wogan stated that it is not clear whether this incident was retaliatory or not.
The Blue Island Police Department has announced that various law enforcement agencies, including the state police and the FBI, are providing their assistance.
