Senator Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, stated on Sunday that President Biden would honor the Supreme Court’s upcoming decision regarding former President Trump’s argument of immunity.
During an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” Senator Coons emphasized the clear contrast between President Biden and former President Trump when it comes to their attitudes towards the rule of law and their approach to law enforcement and the legal system.
During an interview with Shannon Bream on “Fox News Sunday,” the Delaware senator was asked if he would accept the Supreme Court’s decision, given his previous criticism of the high court’s ruling on his proposal for student loan forgiveness. Biden’s response to the question was not included in the given text.
This week, the Supreme Court is anticipated to release its decision regarding Trump’s claim of immunity. The former president asserts that he cannot be charged with conspiring to undermine the 2020 election because of his presidential immunity.
Lower courts have rejected the argument that has caused a delay in Trump’s criminal trial in Washington, D.C. However, during the Supreme Court’s oral arguments, there seemed to be an openness to granting some immunity for former presidents. Despite this, it remains to be seen whether or not this will fully satisfy Trump’s defense team.
The exact day when the decision will be announced remains uncertain. However, the Supreme Court is running out of time as the justices have set a deadline to complete opinions by the end of June.
During Trump’s hush money trial, he appeared in a courtroom in New York and relentlessly criticized the prosecutor, the prosecution, the judge, and the jury. Senator Coons pointed out that Trump’s attacks on the whole process were so frequent that he was eventually convicted of 34 felonies by a jury of his peers, after being subjected to a gag order.
During the case, the ex-president launched several verbal attacks against Judge Juan Merchan, as well as his family members and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D), who was responsible for bringing the case against him. These comments prompted Merchan to issue a gag order that prevented the ex-president from discussing the families of Merchan and Bragg, as well as jurors, witnesses, and the family members of any counsel or staff member involved in the case.
Coons aimed to draw a comparison between this situation and how President Biden dealt with his son’s recent criminal conviction in federal court. Hunter Biden, the president’s son, was charged with three felony counts for falsely stating on federal forms about his drug use to purchase a firearm illegally. This makes him the first child of a sitting president to be criminally convicted.
Coons pointed out that President Biden’s son was recently convicted in a court in Wilmington, Delaware, and yet the President did not criticize or question the judge, prosecutor, jury, or the process. This serves as evidence of Biden’s commitment to upholding the law and avoiding any misuse of his pardon power.
In a clear statement, Biden firmly stated that he will not commute his son’s sentence and will honor the decision made by the jury. There will be no pardon for his son’s actions.
