On Monday, Kate Cox shared the news of her pregnancy, after being denied an emergency abortion in Texas last year.
On the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade and stripping away the constitutional right to an abortion throughout the country, she made her announcement.

In December of 2023, Cox filed a lawsuit against the state of Texas. She sought an emergency abortion that her doctor deemed necessary to safeguard both her health and her potential for future fertility.
The diagnosis for Cox’s fetus revealed trisomy 18, a condition that is considered incompatible with life.
Due to Texas’ strict abortion laws, a mother of two from the state was at risk of losing her uterus, which could have prevented her from having a third child. Despite her strong desire to expand her family, the possibility of losing her uterus made it seem impossible.
In the end, Cox was compelled to depart from Texas to obtain an abortion as the state’s highest court ruled against her.
During a campaign event in Maryland on Monday, Cox and Vice President called for the restoration of abortion access. Cox pointed out that sometimes pregnancies that were eagerly anticipated and hoped for can still result in the difficult decision to have an abortion.
Back in March, the president’s State of the Union address had the honor of hosting her as a guest of first lady Jill Biden.
As Cox looks back on her journey, she shares how each passing minute of her pregnancy posed a growing threat to her health and any future pregnancies. Recalling the moment her doctor delivered the news, she admits it was the most agonizing experience she’s ever had to endure. Cox shares, “It was every minute that I stayed pregnant, the risks to my health and to a future pregnancy were growing.”
Amidst cheers and applause, she joyfully announced, “I am thrilled to share that I am expecting once again.”
In January, Cox is expecting her baby and she expressed her hope for a country led by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
In expressing her gratitude, Cox acknowledged President Biden and Vice President Harris for their unwavering commitment to defending reproductive rights. She urged voters to join the cause and help in the restoration of these fundamental rights in the upcoming elections.
