On Tuesday, the Georgia Supreme Court decided to remove a judge from the bench in metro Atlanta following an investigation into numerous ethics charges.
Just days after his arrest at an Atlanta nightclub, a ruling has been made regarding the judge’s case.
At the Red Martini Restaurant and Lounge on Peachtree Street, a police officer was allegedly subjected to simple battery by Douglas County Probate Judge Christina Peterson.
In 2022, the Judicial Qualifications Commission brought ethics charges against Peterson.
The JQC made a decision to remove Peterson from the bench, which was later supported by the Georgia Supreme Court on Tuesday. It is important to note that this ruling is separate from Peterson’s arrest.
To sum up, considering the various breaches of CJC rules by the individual relating to multiple issues, including some that displayed a complete disregard for the law, court rules, and judicial conduct, the Director provided clear and convincing evidence of a pattern of violations. Furthermore, the severity of some of these violations, especially concerning the criminal contempt matter, and the individual’s behavior during the JQC inquiry, we believe that removal is the suitable penalty.
The ethics charges against Peterson have been under the spotlight since 2022, as reported by Channel 2 Action News.
In 2020, Peterson was elected as a judge, but even before her swearing-in, her purported misuse of social media drew the JQC’s attention. The commission levelled numerous ethics charges against her in this regard.
