According to reports, an ongoing investigation is being conducted by Arizona authorities to determine if a 27-year-old temporary election worker had political motives when he stole a fob that granted him access to vote tabulators before the July 30 primary. The worker was employed in the state’s largest county.
During a press conference in Phoenix, Maricopa County Sheriff Russ Skinner stated that this was not a typical theft. At this time, there is no information available regarding the suspect’s beliefs.
Authorities are currently examining Walter Ringfield’s social media accounts and phone to ascertain whether he acted alone when he acquired the small black fob that grants access to the tabulators utilized in the county. This county has been the subject of numerous election conspiracy theories after President Joe Biden narrowly defeated former President Donald Trump in the state four years ago. Skinner has confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
During the lead-up to the primary, Trump made an unfounded accusation of widespread fraud in Maricopa. This prompted Republican lawmakers to initiate a review of the ballot count, which was riddled with errors. Additionally, local GOP officials who supported their staff’s vote tallies faced a barrage of threats. To assist with the election, the county hired over 2,000 temporary workers, as the Republican county recorder and supervisors faced challenges from proponents of election conspiracy theories.
According to the sheriff’s office statement, Ringfield was caught on surveillance footage taking one of the fobs from a desk around 5 p.m. on Thursday. After election workers discovered the missing fob, Ringfield was arrested at his Phoenix residence the following day.
According to the agency’s statement, Ringfield claimed that he took the fob to assist with the cleaning process and also aspired to secure a permanent position in the elections office. As of now, the public defender’s office has not assigned a lawyer to represent Ringfield.
According to Skinner and Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates, election officials took the necessary steps to ensure that the tabulators were secure and inaccessible by the fob. Additionally, a new test of the counting equipment was conducted with representatives from both major parties present to verify its functionality. Gates, who is a Republican, emphasized that this incident demonstrates the robustness of the county’s operation.
Gates stated that they arrested the suspect on the same day they discovered the item was missing. He emphasized that the incident showcased the effectiveness of their protocols. They have a robust security system in place with cameras and observers to prevent such occurrences.
Gates made a reference to the past years of unrest during the elections in the county and expressed his hope that people would not use this incident as a basis to create more conspiracy theories.
According to a statement released by the Republican National Committee, they have sent their staff to Maricopa following the incident. The party’s election integrity operation is being overseen by Christina Bobb, an attorney and former conservative news network reporter who supported the conspiratorial review of the county’s 2020 election.
Michael Whatley, the chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), has expressed concerns regarding the recent security breach during the Arizona elections. In a statement, he emphasized the need to address the issue and work with Maricopa County officials to ensure that the remedies implemented are sufficient to address their concerns. This incident has raised serious questions about the security of elections in Arizona, and the RNC is committed to being constructively engaged in finding solutions.
