Melinda Katz, the Queens District Attorney, has recently announced that Jayson Scott and Richard Swygert have been arraigned on charges related to the murder of Darius Guillebeaux in South Jamaica in 2021. Scott, who is believed to be the hired gunman, is facing charges of both first and second-degree murder, while Swygert has been charged with second-degree murder and other counts.
On June 7, 2021, at approximately 7:55 p.m, Guillebeaux was tragically shot and killed at the intersection of 148th Street and Rockaway Boulevard. Surveillance footage and cell phone tracking have revealed that Scott and Swygert were present at the scene of the crime. Additionally, their activities before and after the shooting, such as being picked up and dropped off by a unique silver Elantra and fleeing in a red Elantra, were recorded.
Two individuals, Scott and Swygert, hailing from the Bronx, were presented with a seven-count indictment, which includes charges of murder in the first and second degrees, as well as reckless endangerment. Scott, aged 23, and Swygert, aged 22, have been remanded without bail and are scheduled to appear in court on July 31 to face these charges.
The arraignments were overseen by Justice Ushir Pandit-Durant. Scott could be sentenced to life imprisonment without parole if found guilty, while Swygert could be imprisoned for up to 25 years. The charges against them and their subsequent arrests serve as a stark reminder of the continued efforts being made to put an end to the dangerous gun violence plaguing Queens communities.
