Donald Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, has shockingly acknowledged that the ex-president could face jail time if he loses his next criminal hush money trial.
Habba highlighted her fears in a Newsmax interview: “I don’t have very high hopes right now that the New York courts and the jury will do the right thing.” We’re in a blue state. And I believe that is all by design.”
“We’re in a case that was eight years old, over the statute of limitations, denied by [former Manhattan District Attorney] Cy Vance, then brought only after President Trump decided he was going to run for office,” she continued.
Although Habba does not actively defend Trump in the hush money lawsuit, he communicates with him and is knowledgeable about his legal issues.
Habba elaborated on the situation during the interview, saying, “Look at how many individuals they’ve got… I can’t talk about it, American, due to the unjust gag order, but I believe we should also look at who is on that team and where they came from. It’s quite troubling…”We’re fighting for our lives right now,” reports the Express US.
This disclosure comes after prosecutors claimed on Thursday that Trump again violated a gag order in his hush money case.
Judge Juan Merchan has been debating whether to charge Trump with contempt and levy monetary penalties for ten alleged violations of a rule banning him from publicly discussing key case information. The prosecution recently disclosed additional suspected breaches.
Assistant District Attorney Christopher Conroy made reference to Trump’s other comments about key prosecution witness Michael Cohen, Trump’s former counsel. Trump made these remarks in interviews and while addressing reporters outside the court.
Conroy also cited Trump’s claim that the jury is primarily made up of “95 percent Democrats,” among other issues.
Furthermore, the US Supreme Court debated whether Trump should escape punishment for any actions taken during his presidency on the same day.
Trump had asked to leave the New York courtroom that day to attend the Supreme Court’s extraordinary session. The justices addressed his potential indictment in connection with efforts to reverse his loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
Merchan denied this request, having presided over the trial involving the alleged hush money plot to conceal unfavorable reports about Trump just before the 2016 election.
“I think the Supreme Court has a very important argument before it today,” Trump said outside of court. “I should be there.”
Trump is well-known for maneuvering his way out of legal difficulty, especially now that he is eyeing the White House. However, the outcome of this Supreme Court decision will have long-term implications for future presidents.
This is because the ruling will answer an extraordinary question: to what extent does a former president have immunity from prosecution for alleged official misconduct committed during their term?
Although the Supreme Court’s judgment could be significant, it is unlikely to have an impact on the New York City case, which is primarily concerned with Trump’s conduct during his 2016 presidential campaign. Currently, 34 felony accusations are against him for manipulating business documents related to hush money to suppress negative reports.
Notably, a jury will hear the first of four criminal cases against Trump.
Trump, ever obstinate, maintains his innocence in all claims. Concerning the claims made in New York, he dismissed the paid and silenced stories as bogus. “There is no case here. “This is just a political witch hunt,” he said nonchalantly as he spoke with journalists outside the courthouse.
