According to Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), President Joe Biden’s lackluster debate performance may have been due to him being overly prepared for the event.
During an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union with Dana Bash, James Clyburn, the co-chair of Biden’s reelection campaign, attributed Thursday’s successful debate performance to Biden’s preparation techniques. Clyburn, who played a crucial role in securing Biden’s primary win in South Carolina during the 2020 campaign, has a close relationship with the president.
According to Clyburn, getting ready for a debate can be challenging. It’s not just about providing the candidate with facts, but also about teaching them how to present those facts and deflect questions. Clyburn noted that these were skills that Joe Biden lacked in the recent debate, but had demonstrated during his previous presidential run.
Both campaigns saw Thursday night’s debate as an opportunity to sway independent and undecided voters, as it had little impact on those already committed to their chosen candidate. Representative Clyburn deflected questions regarding the effect of Biden’s subpar performance on these voters, emphasizing the importance of evaluating both candidates’ records.
Clyburn advises independents and undecided voters to consider the candidates’ track record. Although Biden’s performance was lackluster, Clyburn believes that it was due to being overloaded with preparation. Clyburn attests to having experience with debate preparation and recognizing the signs of “preparation overload.” During the debate, he observed Biden struggling to recall words, phrases, and even numbers that he was loaded up with.
Clyburn expressed that after arriving in North Carolina, Biden’s speech was captivating and delivered with ease, leaving the audience in awe. Bash, however, shared her belief that Biden had used a teleprompter during his rally in North Carolina on Friday.
Clyburn has made it clear that he fully supports Biden as the Democratic nominee. He encourages voters to take a closer look at the track records of both Biden and Trump, instead of solely focusing on one subpar performance.
According to Clyburn, Joe Biden has proved his leadership abilities over the past three and a half years, and he sees no issue with him continuing to lead for the next four years. Clyburn emphasizes that the best way to predict future behavior is by looking at past performance. Taking this approach, it is evident that both Biden and the other front runner of their party have displayed indications of what their future behavior would be.
According to Clyburn, Joe Biden can leverage his track record to his advantage. He believes that when compared to Trump’s four-year tenure, people will see Biden as the ideal choice not just for domestic affairs but also on the international front. “So Joe Biden can continue to run on his record, I do believe that people will find him when contrasted with the four years of Trump, that will be exactly what we need going forward, not just domestically but internationally as well,” Clyburn continued.
