California Governor Gavin Newsom is set to travel to Washington on Wednesday to join a meeting between President Joe Biden and Democratic governors. The meeting comes in the wake of the fallout from Biden’s controversial debate with former President Donald Trump.
Late on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the California Democrat announced that Governor Newsom would be heading to the White House on Wednesday to attend the Governors meeting and to stand with the President.
With concerns about the president’s cognitive abilities still looming after his shaky debate performance, White House aides are working to ease worries. Meanwhile, Democratic governors and congressional leaders are set to meet with Joe Biden on Wednesday evening. This meeting comes after a Monday call where two dozen Democratic governors discussed how to respond to the crisis situation. Notably absent from the call was California Governor Gavin Newsom, whose name often appears in polls alongside other potential Democratic surrogates like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.
Last week in Atlanta, Newsom was present in the spin room to support President Biden, whom he has consistently supported. The president’s performance in the debate was lackluster, with the 81-year-old struggling to answer some questions and appearing confused. Despite this, Newsom dismissed calls for Biden to step aside and emphasized the importance of looking at his record in office rather than a single 90-minute debate.
In the days following the debate, Newsom has been actively showing his support for the Biden campaign, both vocally and financially. He has played a vital role in helping raise several hundred thousand dollars for the Democratic National Committee and the president. Despite intense speculation about his potential candidacy on the Democratic ticket, Newsom has chosen to remain focused on his efforts to support the party’s presidential nominee.
