Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein revealed that she got arrested on Saturday during her participation in a protest against the Israel-Hamas war on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis.
According to a statement from Washington University in St. Louis, over 80 individuals were arrested on Saturday after they repeatedly refused to leave despite being asked multiple times.
The school’s statement made it clear that all individuals involved will be charged with trespassing. Additionally, some may face additional charges such as resisting arrest and assault, particularly for any injuries inflicted upon police officers.
Stein’s campaign account shared a video where the candidate is seen being escorted off campus by two police officers. In the video, her hands appear to be tied behind her back. According to her campaign, Stein was arrested along with her campaign manager, Jason Call, and deputy campaign manager, Kelly Merrill-Cayer.
Stein and the rest of the protestors were released from St. Louis County Jail at approximately 2 a.m., as reported by her campaign account.
The St. Louis County Jail directed The Hill to the university for additional verification.
There has been a surge in anti-Israel protests on college campuses, leading administrators to instruct police to make arrests.
According to a statement from WashU, a significant number of individuals arrived on campus over the weekend with the purpose of causing a disruption. Upon discovering that the group had set up a camp in violation of university policy, the decision was made to inform everyone present that they needed to leave.
The university statement emphasized its strong commitment to free expression and the importance of respecting their policies. It made it clear that while they encourage voices to be heard on campus, they will not hesitate to take decisive action to enforce those policies.
