According to the university, approximately 100 protestors were arrested on Saturday morning during a pro-Palestine protest at Northeastern University.
Northeastern University took action on Saturday morning to clear an “unauthorized encampment” on its Boston campus. The school’s police department, in collaboration with local law enforcement, commenced the operation.
The protesters were instructed to vacate the encampment, which had been established at the school’s Centennial Common earlier this week.
During the early morning hours on Saturday, Massachusetts State Police officers took action by arresting non-student protestors and dismantling certain encampments.
In a statement released on social media platform X, Northeastern University clarified that the student demonstration that took place two days ago had been infiltrated by professional organizers who were not affiliated with the university.
The school reported that about 100 individuals were detained by the police during the site clearance.
According to the institution, students who presented a valid Northeastern ID were released and will be subject to disciplinary proceedings within the university, rather than legal action.
The school stated that individuals who refused to reveal their affiliation were apprehended.
Northeastern, like many colleges across the country, has experienced pro-Palestine demonstrations on its campuses. Students have been protesting the Israel-Hamas conflict and advocating for schools to disclose their investments.
The school took action to remove the protest encampments after they discovered the presence of “virulent antisemitic slurs” within the protests.
The school’s statement expresses that they will not tolerate this kind of hate on their campus.
According to Huskies for a Free Palestine, the student organization spearheading the protest, they claim that the administration swiftly disseminated misleading information regarding the encampment.
“We’re here because our university refuses to acknowledge the immense humanitarian crisis caused by the Genocide against Palestinians,” the group declared on Instagram. “Northeastern University is turning a blind eye to the weapon manufacturers who continue to do business with the Israeli military.”
The group’s Instagram videos capture protestors chanting “Free, free Palestine” while police officers, donned in riot gear, observe the situation on campus.
Northeastern provided an update stating that Centennial Common has been completely secured and that campus operations have now resumed to their normal state.
The school expressed their gratitude to NUPD, Student Life staff, and the university’s external partners for their impeccable execution this morning, as stated on X.
