The Democratic presidential primary in Puerto Rico took place on Sunday, with a total of 55 delegates at stake.
According to ABC News, President Joe Biden is expected to emerge as the winner.
He secured the party’s nomination for the 2024 election after being the sole major candidate running.
The polling hours for this election were from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In order to participate in the Democratic Party’s race, voters in the territory must have officially declared themselves as Democrats, despite the presence of open primaries.
Teritory’s significance
Being a U.S. territory, Puerto Rico does not partake in presidential general elections. However, it does play a crucial role in the nomination process of the political parties’ candidates.
Former President Donald Trump emerged as the victor in the Republican primary for Puerto Rico’s 2024 election, which took place earlier this month.
In the 2020 primary, Biden emerged as the winner of his party’s nomination, securing 56% of the vote and defeating Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
In the 2016 GOP primary, Marco Rubio emerged as the victor in the fiercely contested race, securing an impressive 70% of the vote. This outstanding performance led to his defeat of then-candidate Trump in the territory.
