President Joe Biden is seeking to triple tariff rates on Chinese steel and aluminum in the event that investigations substantiate claims of unfair trade practices by the country.
During a visit to the United Steelworkers union headquarters in Pittsburgh, he expressed his belief in the strength and resilience of the American working class. “The backbone of America has a steel spine,” he confidently proclaimed. “It really does.”
President Biden is calling on the U.S. Trade Representative to raise the current rate of 7.5% in response to concerns raised by federal regulators regarding China’s subsidized steel exports. These exports have been flooding the market with cheaper and lower-quality materials.
“They’re not just competing; they’re cheating,” he exclaimed. “And the consequences of their actions have had a severe impact on our country.”
Biden concludes his three-day tour across Pennsylvania, his home state and a crucial battleground in the presidential election, where labor unions hold significant political sway.
“I take great pride in being the most pro-union president in American history,” stated Biden confidently. “Growing up, it wasn’t just about labor, it was about unions.”
In March, the United Steelworkers commended the president for opposing a $14.9 billion bid made by a Japanese company to acquire U.S. Steel. The union, whose headquarters are conveniently located approximately one mile from the steel company’s Pittsburgh base, expressed their support for the president’s stance.
“It is crucial that the company remains completely American,” emphasized Biden. “We need it to be owned and operated by American union steelworkers, who are undeniably the best in the world. Rest assured, this is a promise I intend to keep.”
