President Joe Biden has expressed his celebration for the United Auto Workers and Daimler Truck’s achievement of reaching a tentative agreement. This agreement successfully averted a potential strike that could have affected around 7,300 workers.
Late on Friday, just before their contract was set to expire, the UAW and Daimler reached an agreement.
“I commend the UAW and Daimler for reaching a groundbreaking tentative agreement for a record contract,” stated Biden on Sunday. “The dedicated UAW workers at Daimler are playing a vital role in manufacturing the trucks and school buses of the future, right here in America.”
“This agreement demonstrates the strength of collective bargaining and underscores the potential to create a robust clean energy economy supported by well-paying union jobs.”
The agreement reached on Friday is a four-year extension that guarantees workers a minimum 25% wage increase throughout the duration of the contract.
The new agreement not only eliminates wage tiers but also brings in profit-sharing and cost-of-living increases. Additionally, it enhances job security and establishes guarantees on the minimum number of vehicles to be manufactured at each plant. These changes introduce a range of positive modifications.
“Tonight, it’s evident that both the company and the world have listened to your message: We are the ones responsible for building the product and generating the profits. Therefore, we deserve a fair deal that acknowledges our dedication and hard work,” emphasized UAW President Shawn Fain on Friday night when he announced the deal.
“We achieve greater success when we remain united.”
Daimler Truck, a leading manufacturer of buses and trucks, operates globally with a workforce of over 100,000 employees spread across 40 locations in North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America, as mentioned on their official website.
The negotiation process commenced approximately three weeks ago and concluded within a week after the employees at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga factory in Tennessee voted overwhelmingly in favor of joining the UAW.
The UAW officially endorsed Biden for his re-election in January.
