April is Donate Life Month, and in celebration of this, we have the privilege of hearing the inspiring story of Steve Richberg, a brave 39-year-old who has experienced the life-saving impact of organ donation firsthand.
Richberg, a devoted father of two sons, found himself occupied with the responsibilities of parenthood until he was unexpectedly affected by a stroke at the age of 28. As a result, he was forced to put his life on hold and spent years awaiting a heart transplant.
Richberg expressed gratitude for being present with his loved ones and witnessing their growth and experiences, acknowledging the uncertainty of the future. He emphasized the blessing of being able to be there for them, especially considering the fears he had about missing out on these moments.
In 2016, Richberg underwent his first heart transplant. Soon after, he was able to resume his beloved activities of watching his children excel in sports and achieve significant milestones.
In April 2022, he suffered a heart attack that brought him back to the hospital, where he required another transplant. Richberg and his family stayed by his side until he could find a donor.
According to Richberg, his family’s positive attitude was the driving force behind his perseverance.
“I had to lie there patiently and maintain a positive mindset, constantly reminding myself that it would happen soon,” he shared.
On April 18, 2022, he was fortunate enough to receive his second heart transplant.
Dr. Russell Davis performed the transplantation of both of Richberg’s hearts. According to him, Richberg, along with numerous others on the organ transplant waitlist, deserves another opportunity at life.
According to Davis, “When you embody the qualities of someone like Steve, who has consistently made wise decisions and taken excellent care of their body, it can be disheartening to realize that you have no control over when your organs may fail you.”
Davis and Richberg had their long-awaited reunion on Wednesday afternoon. It was their first meeting since Richberg’s discharge from the hospital.
Dr. Davis finds great satisfaction in witnessing patients years after a successful surgery. This experience fuels his passion for promoting organ donation.
Davis urged individuals to seize the opportunity and transform negative situations into positive ones for those in their vicinity. He emphasized the importance of providing others with a chance and instilling hope in them.
Richberg attributes his newfound perspective on life to his organ donor and their family.
“I feel like I have gained a new perspective on life. I have become more aware of the world around me and have found a sense of peace within myself,” he expressed. “I have also developed a deeper appreciation for the relationships I have with my loved ones and have learned to be grateful for the small joys in life.”
Richberg and his wife have recently bid farewell to their eldest son as he embarked on his journey to college at Mizzou. Meanwhile, they take great delight in witnessing their youngest son’s endeavors on the football field at Blue Springs South.
