The Jaguars are not taking up quarterback Mac Jones’ fifth-year option, which is predictable given that the team acquired him to fight for a backup job behind Trevor Lawrence.
The team exercised Lawrence’s fifth-year option on Monday, as well as running back Travis Etienne Jr.
In March, the Jaguars traded a 2024 sixth-round pick to the New England Patriots for Jones, who will compete with C.J. Beathard for Lawrence’s backup spot this season and maybe beyond. In 2021, Lawrence was the first overall pick, and Jones came in 14 spots later.
Jones, who grew up in Jacksonville, completed 66.1% of his throws for 8,918 yards, 46 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions across three seasons with the Patriots. As a rookie, he led New England to the playoffs, throwing for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions while also making the Pro Bowl as an alternate.
He struggled in the following two seasons, and Bailey Zappe replaced him after 11 games last season.
