A Georgia man was handed a prison sentence of over four years for his involvement in assaulting Capitol police on January 6.
Whitton has been sentenced to 57 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras. Additionally, the judge has also ordered mental-health treatment for Whitton.
Whitton is also required to pay a $2,000 fine. After serving his prison term, he will be under three years of supervised release.
During the hearing, Contreras expressed his shock and disapproval of the videos, stating, “Those videos were gruesome. You really went out of control.”
During one of the assaults, Whitton openly admitted yelling at officers, saying, “You’re gonna die tonight!”
Whitton later sent a message to a friend on Instagram, describing the officer he pulled into the mob as a “bad cop.”
Logan James Barnhart, a 41-year-old former romance novel cover model from Michigan, received a prison sentence of 36 months last month. He was found guilty of assisting Whitton in dragging the officer into the crowd.
In August 2021, the officer was assaulted, and charges were filed against five men, including the two mentioned.
The prosecutors claimed that his attack on a police officer sparked a chain of brutal assaults on others in the lower west tunnel. They argued that he should not be allowed to benefit from his involvement in the riot.
According to his lawyers, his actions were attributed to a combination of alcohol and ADHD medications. They contended that he had no genuine interest in former President Trump or politics and that his trip to Washington was solely to please his longtime girlfriend.
Mr. Whitton’s attorney, Komron Jon Maknoon, noted that although Mr. Whitton was not particularly interested in the day’s events, he tried his best to be a supportive boyfriend. Rather than drinking for entertainment, he drank in order to endure the cold weather and lengthy speeches at the ellipse.
The Jan. 6 Capitol attack has resulted in charges being brought against nearly 1,400 individuals, with 950 of them being convicted.
