Philip Martin, who worked in the Obama-Biden administration, expresses a sense of betrayal towards President Joe Biden’s unwavering backing of Israel amidst its ongoing offensive in Gaza. This comes despite the fact that just seven months ago, the terrorist organization Hamas claimed the lives of 1,200 people in Israel and held 250 individuals hostage.
In 2008, Martin, a former director in the U.S. Department of Education, expressed his anger towards the Bush administration for exploiting the nation’s suffering to justify the civilian casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan. He joined the Obama campaign driven by this fury.
According to him, Biden’s Israel foreign policy is having a comparable impact.
He expressed his anger and feelings of betrayal at the Biden administration’s unconditional support for the Israeli war machine, which is causing harm and terror to Palestinian civilians through killing, displacing, starving, and other means.
Close to 300 former Obama-Biden administration and campaign alumni have penned a letter, urging President Biden to halt military aid to Israel. Addressed to both Biden and former President Barack Obama, the letter carries the collective voice of these individuals who seek a suspension of such aid.
The letter, signed by a total of 290 individuals (201 of whom provided their names while the others included their titles), urges President Biden to take prompt action by calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and the withdrawal of troops from both Gaza and the West Bank. This represents the second collective letter sent to President Biden by former Obama-Biden staffers since November.
“We feel compelled to address both of you as influential leaders who have the power to shape the destiny of Palestinians and our democratic society in America,” the letter states. “We urge both of you to take the lead at this critical moment, before our democracy and the world at large regresses further into conflict and authoritarianism.”
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the death toll in Gaza has exceeded 35,000. However, the impact of the conflict goes beyond the loss of lives. A recent report from the United Nations warns of an imminent famine, putting more than 2 million people at risk. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is reaching a critical point, with urgent action required to address the growing threat of famine.
According to a recent Gallup survey, which was released on March 27th, the majority of Americans, 55% to be precise, are not in favor of Israel’s military action. This disapproval is particularly prominent among Democrats, with 75% expressing their discontent. It’s worth noting that this percentage has increased from 63% since last November.
Some donors, including those who were involved in Biden’s 2020 election campaign, have withdrawn their support for his reelection. The dwindling support for Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza poses a potential threat to the unity of the Democratic coalition, which is a priority for the president.
Sara Eckhouse, a granddaughter of a Holocaust refugee, has had a unique perspective on the matter. Having worked as a field organizer for the Obama campaign in 2008, and later as a senior advisor in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, she has witnessed firsthand the atrocities and war crimes committed in the name of “protecting Jews.” This experience has compelled her to speak out and shed light on these issues.
“This goes beyond politics; it is a matter of humanity and the inherent worth of every human life,” she passionately expressed. “The President often speaks of his mission to restore the soul of America, and I sincerely hope that this letter serves as a poignant reminder that we are holding him responsible for fulfilling that promise when it comes to alleviating the immense suffering endured by millions of Palestinians.”
The letter warns Biden about the potential risks of defending the war crimes and agenda of a foreign far-right government, emphasizing that it is not uncommitted voters or third-party candidates who are jeopardizing our democracy and the possibility of a Trump presidency.
According to Rumana Ahmed, a former senior adviser at the National Security Council during the Obama administration, the policy actions being advocated by the group are not only morally right but also strategically significant for the collective security of all individuals.
