Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) reportedly signed a bill into law Thursday to assure that President Biden’s name appears on the state’s November ballot.
According to the Associated Press, a spokesperson confirmed that the bill has been signed. The Hill has contacted Ivey’s office for further comment.
The bill was signed after receiving unanimous approval from the Alabama State Senate. This comes after a state elections official cautioned that Biden might not meet the deadline to qualify.
According to the AP, the legislation was unanimously approved by members of Alabama’s House of Representatives on Thursday.
The Biden campaign has announced that Biden will be listed as a candidate in all 50 states for the upcoming election.
The Biden campaign stated that election after election, states across the country have followed the bipartisan consensus and taken the required measures to guarantee that the presidential nominees from both parties will appear on the ballot.
State Senator Merika Coleman (D), the sponsor of the bill, expressed her joy when the legislation was passed in a bipartisan manner, calling it a “great day in Alabama.” The Alabama House Democrats expressed their gratitude to Coleman and House Democratic Leader Anthony Daniels for their dedicated efforts by posting a message online.
In Ohio, Biden is also confronted with a similar challenge. State elections officials have stated that the state Legislature must grant an exemption to the state’s 90-day rule, which currently establishes the ballot deadline on August 7th, by Thursday.
