Russia has reportedly deployed a significant number of soldiers, estimated to be around 25,000, near the strategically important settlement of Chasiv Yar, according to the Ukrainian military. In addition, the Kremlin has asserted that it has taken control of another village in the Donetsk region.
According to the ISW, capturing Chasiv Yar would not only grant Russia control over the strategic location, but it would also enable them to sever the supply route to Kostiantynivka. This would greatly undermine Ukraine’s defense capabilities in the Donetsk region, as Kostiantynivka is considered its crucial stronghold.
According to Ukraine’s army chief, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, last month Moscow made an attempt to breach their defenses west of Bakhmut. The objective was to seize control of Chasiv Yar and establish a foundation for future advancement towards the northwest city of Kramatorsk, which is located near Donetsk.
According to the ISW’s assessment on Saturday, the fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces near Chasiv Yar on May 4 persisted, but there were no confirmed alterations to the front line.
On Sunday, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that it had launched an attack on Ukrainian positions near Bakhmut, specifically targeting the area of Klishchiivka.
Russian forces have declared the complete liberation of the village of Ocheretyne, located northwest of the Russian-held city of Avdiivka, according to a statement by Moscow.
According to the latest assessment by the ISW, Russian forces achieved a significant tactical progress near Arkhanhelske, situated northwest of Avdiivka, over the course of Friday and Saturday. Earlier this month, Russian media had reported Ukraine’s withdrawal from the village, and geolocated footage from Friday displayed the retreat of Kyiv’s troops from the northern part of the village.
