Federal and international authorities arrested David Knezevich, the husband of a Florida woman who mysteriously vanished from an apartment in Spain in February, on Saturday.
Ana Maria Knezevich, 40, was last seen in Madrid, Spain, on February 2 around 10 p.m., less than 30 minutes after a guy wearing a motorcycle helmet spray-painted surveillance cameras at her Salamanca apartment building.
Police arrested David, 36, at Miami International Airport for the disappearance of his wife, according to a Monday post on X by Policรญa Nacional, the Spanish international police.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, the FBI confirmed David’s arrest for “involvement in the kidnapping of a US citizen in Madrid, Spain, on or about February 2, 2024.”
“The Diplomatic Security Service and the FBI made the arrest without incident at Miami International Airport on Saturday.” “The subject is in federal custody,” an FBI spokesperson stated. “We anticipate his first appearance in Miami federal court.” The Spanish National Police, Customs and Border Protection, the Diplomatic Security Service, and the FBI are all continuing their investigations. We will not disclose any additional information at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
David’s attorney, Ken Padowitz, verified his client’s detention. Padowitz said he would meet with David in court on Monday morning.
“We are hoping that this next chapter will bring justice and help us find answers to what has happened to Ana,” she stated.
On Feb. 7, Ana’s brother, Juan Henao, informed Fort Lauderdale police that the couple was going through a “nasty” divorce with “a lot of money on the line,” according to a report. He reportedly informed authorities that he was “very concerned” about his sister.
“He stated that David traveled to Serbia on January 17th of this year, but he is unsure how long he stayed there,” the report adds. “Furthermore, he contacted and texted David, asking him where Ana was, but to no avail.” Juan stated that David responded to him last night at 6 p.m. via ‘Whats [App]’ as if he were out of the country, informing him that Ana was missing and nothing else.”
David left Fort Lauderdale for Serbia, where he is originally from, months before his wife disappeared during their separation. Ana had been spending a lot of time in Europe with friends since the couple started talking about divorce.
“He has no answers as to why this happened, and he feels terrible, but he definitely wants to speak up when facts are put out there indicating that there was a ‘nasty’ divorce when no such thing is a fact,” Padowitz previously told Fox News Digital of the news headlines that circulated following Ana’s disappearance.
Ana and David co-owned an IT company in South Florida and were both interested in real estate. In a prior phone interview with Fox News Digital, Rameau portrayed them as a “successful couple” who had been married for 13 years before deciding to separate last summer.
“It was difficult for her, obviously, so she started spending more time in Europe, in Madrid, where she has friends from before,” Rameau added.
Then she vanished.
On February 3, Rameau received an unusual text from Ana, a day after she suspected her companion had been “taken against her will.”
“I met someone wonderful!” The WhatsApp message reads: “He owns a holiday property approximately two [hours] from Madrid. We are on our way there today, and I plan to spend a few days there. The signal is patchy. I will call you when I come back.”
A second message to Rameau reads: “After therapy yesterday, I needed a walk, and he approached me on the street!” Amazing connection. “Like I’ve never had before.”
The Fort Lauderdale Police Department informed Fox News Digital that due to Knezevich’s “reported missing abroad,” the FLPD “is not investigating her disappearance.” The department directed Fox News Digital to the State Department, which did not respond to requests for comment.
Padowitz previously stated that David has no ties to Madrid, does not speak Spanish, and has been working with investigators there while remaining in Serbia.
