Glen “Big Baby” Davis, a former NBA player, was sentenced to 40 months in jail on Thursday after cheating on the league’s healthcare plan.
The court also sentenced Davis, 38, to three years of supervised release.
Following his conviction in November for health care fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to make false statements, and conspiracy to commit health care and wire fraud, Davis received a 20-year prison sentence.
According to federal prosecutors, Davis and others scammed an insurance plan for NBA players and their families of more than $5 million over a four-year period. The players would falsely submit claims for dental and other medical procedures that they never received.
Davis filed a total of $132,000 in claims, including $27,200 in dental procedures in a Beverly Hills location on October 2, 2018. Authorities stated he was in Las Vegas at the time and went to Paris the following day, citing geolocation data from his iPhone to confirm it.
Davis was one of more than 20 people convicted in the case, including ringleader and former NBA star Terrence Williams, who received a ten-year prison sentence.
Another NBA player, Will Bynum, was sentenced to 18 months in prison last month for making false claims to the NBA Players’ Health and Welfare Benefit Plan and ordered to pay roughly $183,000 in restitution.
Davis spent eight seasons in the NBA, playing for the Boston Celtics, Orlando Magic, and Los Angeles Clippers. He was a member of the Celtics’ championship squad in 2008.
