Comedian James Gregory, who famously referred to himself as “The Funniest Man in America,” has passed away, as confirmed by a statement from his family.
James, according to a post on Gregory’s official Facebook page, passed away on Thursday due to cardiac complications.
James embarked on his comedy journey in the early ’80s at the age of 36. Prior to that, he had spent years honing his skills as a salesman. His groundbreaking debut took place at the iconic Punchline club in Atlanta, marking him as the first comedian to grace its stage. Although he gained recognition as a Southern comedian, James traversed the entire nation, captivating audiences for a remarkable four decades.
In the 1980s, he made a significant mark on the comedy scene by proclaiming himself as “The Funniest Man in America.” To further solidify his status as a comedic genius, he acquired the domain “funniestman.com,” which only served to reinforce this perception among his devoted fans.
JG had actually planned to keep people entertained and laughing for many years to come. This is evident from the fact that he had two shows scheduled in Hoover, Alabama, for both Friday and Saturday.
Fans who adore him will have the opportunity to delve deeper into his life through his forthcoming autobiography, titled “A Bushel of Beans and a Peck of Tomatoes: The Life and Times of ‘The Funniest Man in America'”. This highly anticipated book is scheduled for release in November.
Gregory is survived by his three nieces and other extended family. He lived to be 78 years old.
Rest in peace.
