U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, who is Jewish, expressed his stance on the ongoing conflict in Gaza by stating that Israel should not receive any further financial support from the United States.
In an interview with NBC’s “Meet The Press,” Sanders expressed his strong opinion that Israel has violated both international and American law. He firmly believes that Israel should not receive any further financial support in the form of U.S. military aid.
According to Sanders, the Hamas, the governing body in Gaza under Israeli occupation, is a “disgusting terrorist organization.” He firmly believes that the Palestinian militia initiated the war.
Hamas has stated that their attack on October 7 was in retaliation for the numerous Palestinian casualties caused by Israeli forces and illegal settlers in Palestine in 2023. They also cited the Israeli Police’s raid on the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the widespread detention of Palestinians in Israel as contributing factors to their response.
According to Sanders, it is evident that Hamas is a repugnant and abhorrent terrorist organization that initiated this war. However, he asserts that Israel’s actions in the past seven months have not only targeted Hamas but have also inflicted harm on the entire Palestinian population.
“We’re not just discussing the tragic loss of 35,000 Palestinian lives and the staggering number of 77,000 injuries, with the majority being women and children. This is not how a civilized society should wage war, even if war itself can never truly be considered civilized.”
Bernie Sanders criticized Israel for causing extensive damage to Gaza, including the demolition of 60% of the residential buildings, the destruction of vital civilian infrastructure such as water and sewage systems, and the devastation of hospitals.
According to Sanders, every university in Gaza has been bombed, which is an alarming situation. What’s even more concerning is the potential for hundreds of thousands of children in the region to face starvation, as highlighted by humanitarian organizations.
According to the Foreign Assistance Act, it explicitly states that any entity, state, or country that impedes U.S. humanitarian aid is in violation of the law. In light of this provision (6201), it is imperative that these entities do not receive any further military aid from the United States.
According to Sanders, there is a desire among Republican politicians and some Democrats for Israel to invade Rafah, disregarding the international community’s plea against it. This move is concerning due to the potential humanitarian crisis it could worsen.
According to Sanders, our support for Israel is causing us to become increasingly isolated, as Israel is being seen as a pariah nation.
When Kristen Welker posed a question about finding a non-military solution to eliminate Hamas, highlighting their objective to destroy Israel’s existence, Sanders emphasized the aim of defeating Hamas without causing excessive destruction or completely obliterating the entity.
