Three Atlanta police officers who responded to a call about an armed man on Saturday evening were shot and wounded, according to authorities. The suspect died during the incident.
The incident began at 5:15 p.m. local time when officers responded to a 911 call in Atlanta’s Capitol View area for “a man armed with a weapon who the caller felt was a threat to the community,” Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum told reporters in a news conference.
According to Schierbaum, when cops arrived at the location, they discovered a suspect armed with a handgun and a knife.
“During that encounter, there was a struggle, and there was gunfire that resulted in three of our officers being injured,” Schierbaum stated. “It also resulted in the death of the individual who was armed with a handgun.”
The cops were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. One had a shoulder wound, one had a leg wound, and the third had a “graze wound,” according to Schierbaum. Two of the three have undergone surgery.
“They are alive and stable, alert, conscious, and breathing,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens stated during a news conference outside the hospital.
According to Schierbaum, two of the wounded cops are 31 years old, both four-year agency veterans; the third is 28 years old and has been with the police for five months.
It’s unknown where the shooting happened or what prompted it. Schierbaum stated that the officers were initially dispatched to a commercial area.
The cops’ names were not immediately revealed. The suspect’s name was likewise not given.
Schierbaum stated that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will investigate all officer-involved shootings, as is department protocol.
