Merchan has found Trump in contempt of court for violating the order on 10 separate occasions. In a recent warning, he cautioned Trump that he could face imprisonment for any further breaches of the order.
In a recent incident, Donald Trump made comments regarding the political composition of the jury, which has raised concerns of integrity and legitimacy within the proceedings. Judge Merchan, in a written order on May 6, highlighted that these comments not only question the integrity of the trial but also create fear for the safety of the jurors and their loved ones.
Last week, Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche, requested Merchan to modify the court’s gag order. The purpose was to enable Trump to publicly address the recent court proceedings, specifically in response to Stormy Daniels’ testimony. Daniels, an adult film star, had received $130,000 in 2016 as part of a confidentiality agreement regarding an alleged sexual encounter with Trump, an accusation he vehemently denies.
Merchan denied Blanche’s request, stating that the order remains in effect due to the aggressive and hostile nature of the attacks from Trump.
Merchan acknowledged that the client’s track record speaks for itself.
