Despite concerns about the use of high-payload bombs in Gaza, a congressional source reports that President Biden plans to give Israel another $1 billion in armaments, continuing to support the nation in its fight against Hamas.
Israel’s next shipment is believed to include tank ammunition, tactical vehicles, and artillery rounds.
Biden is still holding 3,500 bombs weighing between 2,000 and 500 pounds, which the president has expressed reservations about sending to Israel because of their probable use in the heavily populated city of Rafah.
Israel has evacuated almost 300,000 people from Rafah, a city in southern Gaza, and is undertaking limited operations in the eastern section of the city, where Israeli officials say Hamas is concealing its final few battalions.
Biden has threatened to withhold offensive weaponry if Israel begins a significant attack on the city, where over a million Palestinians are seeking refuge from the fighting. The United Nations reports that starvation is already rife in northern Gaza, and a Rafah assault will exacerbate the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the rest of the area.
Biden has struggled to handle the war in Gaza, which has killed over 35,000 Palestinians, especially as pro-Palestinian domestic rallies mount, particularly on college campuses.
While his administration has expressed support for Israel’s defense against Hamas, which invaded southern Israel on October 7 and killed over 1,200 people and kidnapped around 250 captives, US officials are equally concerned about the high death toll in Gaza.
Nonetheless, Biden has approved numerous packages of deadly aid for Israel since the war began, and last month he put $26 billion into law for the country.
