During a House committee meeting, there was a contentious exchange between lawmakers Marjorie Taylor Greene and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The disagreement arose when the Georgia Republican commented on the “fake eyelashes” and “intelligence” of another legislator.
In a matter of just 30 minutes during the House Oversight Committee proceedings, Greene shifted her attention away from the focal point of the meeting and targeted Democrat Jasmine Crockett.
The focus of the House’s unusual evening session was meant to revolve around the resolution of whether Attorney General Merrick Garland should face contempt of Congress charges.
The fiery Georgia Republican brazenly pointed out, “I believe your false eyelashes are interfering with your ability to read.”
During the already-tense hearing, Ms. Greene’s outburst caused nearly an hour of disorder in the committee.
The lawmakers engaged in heated arguments and physical altercations, causing Chairman James Comer to struggle in maintaining order.
Ms Greene did not stop at criticizing one Democrat, but continued her attacks on another, Ms Ocasio-Cortez. This was in response to Ms Ocasio-Cortez’s condemnation of the right-wing lawmaker’s offensive and inappropriate comments about Ms Crockett.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez shot back at Greene, expressing her outrage at the latter’s attack on someone’s physical appearance.
The progressive Democrat was taunted by the Republican, who asked if her feelings had been hurt.
“Oh, girl, don’t even play,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez responded, causing her counterpart to mockingly reply, “Oh, really, baby girl?”
The exchange of words continued, and Ms. Greene agreed to remove her statement from the record. However, she did not express any remorse or offer an apology to Ms. Crockett, leading to even more frustration within the Democratic camp.
When questioned, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez declined to engage in a debate with Ms. Greene, prompting the Republican to deliver her final cutting remark: “Yeah, you lack the necessary intelligence.”
Mr. Comer agreed with the decision that Ms. Greene’s insult did not ultimately violate House rules, which left Ms. Crockett puzzled.
During the committee hearing, Representative Crockett questioned the chairman about the inappropriate remarks made by a committee member, stating, “If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blond, bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?”
After more disagreements, the hearing started to calm down as the panel decided to let Ms. Greene continue her speech.
After the hearing took an unexpected turn, it took the committee nearly an hour to refocus on the main topic of the meeting: whether Mr. Garland should be held in contempt of Congress.
