According to the police, the individual believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting of a UPS driver, who was found dead inside his delivery truck, was identified as an employee of the company.
Expedito Cuesta De Leon, 50, was found slumped over in the driver’s seat of the truck when officers arrived at the scene near Fleming and Chrysler around 3 p.m. Thursday. The Irvine Police Department had received several reports of gunshots fired. The officers immediately pulled De Leon out of the vehicle and tried to save his life, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
According to the police, the victim and the suspect, who are both residents of Aliso Viejo, were described as “acquaintances” and both worked for UPS. However, the authorities stated that the motive behind the incident remains unclear.
According to UPS, they are fully cooperating with the investigation, as stated in their recent statement on Friday.
The company expressed its deep sorrow upon learning about the tragic loss of one of its drivers in Irvine, CA. They are currently working closely with the authorities to gain a better understanding of the incident.
Police quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Instead, it seemed that the victim had been specifically targeted.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows a silver Honda Ridgeline pick-up truck pulling up next to the UPS truck before driving away on Goodyear and heading towards Jeronimo, according to police.
Investigators from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department made a significant discovery when they stumbled upon a truck that perfectly matched the description of the vehicle they were seeking. The fortunate encounter occurred on Santiago Canyon Road, right around 4 p.m. Responding swiftly to the scene, officers from the Irvine Police Department were able to confirm that the truck they had found was indeed the same one captured on surveillance video.
Fontanoza was apprehended by SWAT officers from the Irvine Police Department.
De Leon’s friends came together at the location where he tragically lost his life on Friday morning. They gathered to pay their respects and honor their beloved friend. They fondly remembered him as a dedicated and diligent individual, a cherished member of his family, and someone who had a deep passion for mountain biking.
Ramon Amoy expressed his deep sadness, stating, “I am devastated at this moment. It is hard to fathom that something like this could happen to my dear friend.”
