Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, the top Republican woman in the House, spoke to Israel’s parliament on Sunday and criticized President Biden for protecting Israel with military aid. She also praised former President Trump for the same reason.
“There is no excuse for an American president to block aid to Israelโaaid that was duly passed by Congress, or to ease sanctions on Iran, pay a $6 billion ransom to the world’s leading state sponsor of terror, or to dither and hide while our friends fight for their lives,” the New York congresswoman and House GOP conference leader told us.
This month, Mr. Biden said that the U.S. would not send Israel 2,000-pound bombs because the U.S. had stopped a shipment to that country. He also said that the U.S. would not give Israel weapons for an offensive in Rafah, even though he knew that Israel had used strong American-made weapons in attacks in Gaza that killed many people. He stated that the United States would cut off even more weapons shipments if Israel expanded its ground attack to include civilian neighborhoods in Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip.
However, Mr. Biden stated that the U.S. will continue to provide Israel with military aid for defense, and the White House has confirmed that the U.S. will ensure Israel receives the entire promised amount in a recently signed supplemental funding package, which includes approximately $14 billion for Israel’s defense. Also, the Biden administration told Congress last week that it plans to send Israel weapons worth $1 billion.
On Sunday, Andrew Bates, a spokesman for the White House, said, “There has been no better friend to Israel than President Biden.”
“He was the first president of the United States to visit Israel during a warโafter the terrible terrorist attacks on October 7โand the first president to order the U.S. military to defend Israel from an attack by another country.” “President Biden has shown that his support for Israel’s security is ‘ironclad,'” Bates said.
Stefanik said that Americans stand “firmly behind Israel and the Jewish people.” He did this by bringing up a letter that George Washington sent to Jews in Newport, Rhode Island.
Stefanik said, “For years, I have been a leading proponent and partner with President Trump in his historic support for Israeli independence and security.” She is friends with Trump and was one of the first people to support his run for president in 2024.
Stefanik asked the presidents of Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Pennsylvania about antisemitism in their schools at hearings held by Congress at the end of last year. Not long after that, two of the leaders quit.
People in the U.S. love Israel very much, but radicalism in some “elite” circles should not hide that. “Most Americans have a strong bond with your people,” Stefanik told the Knesset.
