Police say that a Minnesota state senator was arrested on Monday, suspected of committing first-degree burglary.
Democratic Senator Nicole Mitchell was apprehended by authorities while present at a residence in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. The city is situated around four hours northwest of Woodbury, the area she represents. Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd confirmed this information to several media outlets, including CBS News and KMSP-TV.

Mitchell, who is 49 years old, was taken into custody on Monday and is currently being held at Becker County Jail. It is important to note that she has not yet been formally charged with the burglary. The police have confirmed this information.

Police responded to a homeowner’s report of a burglary at approximately 4:45 a.m. on Monday, according to Todd, the spokesperson for the police department. Upon arrival, officers discovered Mitchell, a woman, inside the residence.
The decision on whether to pursue the charges will be made by the Becker County Attorney’s Office.
According to the Star Tribune , county property tax records indicate that Mitchell’s stepmother and her late father resided on the same block where the alleged burglary took place in 2022.

Mitchell was elected in 2022 and is currently in her first term. Prior to her current role, she had a career as a TV meteorologist and served as an Air National Guard commander.
The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Caucus declined to comment on the matter, as they stated they are “aware of the situation,” according to CBS News.
“The public holds legislators to a high standard of conduct,” stated Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson in a response to CBS News. “As more details emerge, we anticipate that the consequences will align with the actions, both within the legal system and in her capacity as a legislator.”
